Monday

EY appoints Emma Hosking-Williams as director in its private client and trust team in the Channel Islands. Ms Hosking-Williams joined EY’s London office in 2008 and has moved to the Channel Islands to lead the pan-island private client and trust team. She is particularly experienced in providing advice on the UK taxation of offshore trust and company structures, as well as the taxation of non-UK domiciled individuals and international pension schemes

The Swiss federal government announces plans to tighten the restrictions on citizens from outside of the EU and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) purchasing Swiss property. The new rules could see non-EU or EFTA foreign buyers' purchases subject to approval by the authorities whilst at the same time they would have to sell their apartments if they leave Switzerland to live elsewhere

Tuesday

A Teddington businessman, who ran multiple property companies but failed to declare his income or that he was a company director to HMRC, is sentenced for evading £281,000 in taxes. Property developer and landlord Michael Charles Waddingham is currently the director of two companies and owns 17 properties throughout England. He was sentenced to two years in jail suspended for two years plus an additional financial penalty of £200,000 (in addition to the £281,000 tax he has already repaid)

Wednesday

Accounting, tax and advisory practice, Blick Rothenberg, appoints Nilesh Shah as chief executive. Bob Rothenberg will continue as senior partner with a new role as ambassador for the firm. Mr Shah has headed Blick Rothenberg's tax practice for 15 years and specialises in advising international businesses with their expansion plans with a specific focus on tax

Butterfield Bank in Guernsey hires chartered wealth manager Colleen McHugh as head of wealth management. With over 18 years of experience, most recently as a corporate investment specialist at Barclays, Ms McHugh will work closely with the private banking and asset management teams to build a strategy to develop the business

Thursday

The UK Supreme Court has overturns a decision by the Court of Appeal regarding a woman whose mother left nearly half a million pounds to the RSPCA, RSPB and Blue Cross in her will

Friday

UK law firm Irwin Mitchell makes 80 promotions across the country to a newly created senior associate role, including 12 across the private client areas of law. Promotions in the private client team comprised of Carly Russell, George Merrylees and Tom Gauterin, all are based in London. Jacqui McCoy from the London residential property team was promoted, alongside Sarah Balfour (Birmingham), Sital Fontenelle (London) and Nathaniel Groarke (Manchester) from the family team

A senior barrister who failed to keep clients’ sensitive personal information secure has been fined £1,000 by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Information belonging to up to 250 people, including vulnerable adults and children, was uploaded to the internet when the unidentified barrister’s husband updated software on the couple’s home computer
